The UAE weekend, Fridays and prayer times.
Visitors from the USA, UK, Europe, Australia and Japan often expect a Friday-to-Saturday weekend, or none at all. The picture is more mixed. Here is what the government pages say, what the press reports about Friday prayer, and how to plan a transfer or a coach day around both.

What the weekend is
The UAE federal government works a four and a half day week. According to the government portal, u.ae, hours are 07:30 to 15:30 Monday to Thursday and 07:30 to 12:00 on Friday, and Saturday and Sunday are the official weekend for the federal sector. The portal page was updated on 12 August 2026. Abu Dhabi moved to a Saturday and Sunday weekend with a half working day on Friday from 1 January 2022, according to its media office.
Sharjah does it differently. Its government works four days, Monday to Thursday, and the portal says its official weekend is three days: Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For visitors, the practical point is that the emirates are not identical.
Private companies, shops, hotels and visitor attractions set their own hours. The government weekend tells you when offices are closed. It does not tell you that everything shuts, and we have found no source that says roads or airports are quieter or busier on a given day. So we make no such claim.

Get a quoteFriday prayer
Press reports, including Khaleej Times, Gulf News and The National, say the Friday sermon and prayer in UAE mosques moved to 12:45 pm from Friday 2 January 2026. Khaleej Times quotes the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat on this. The earlier time, 1:15 pm, had been in place since 2022, and many older pages still show it.
We could not open the authority’s own page, so treat 12:45 as a report to check, and look at the current announcement before you travel. We do not know whether Sharjah follows exactly the same time, so we do not state one for it. We also do not print daily prayer times. Use the official prayer-time sources for the city you are in.
What this changes for a transfer
Very little in most cases, which is the honest answer. A transfer from an airport or a station is built around a flight or a train, not a sermon. A day with a coach is where it can matter.
- Tell us in the quote request if anyone in your group will attend Friday prayer, so the pick-up and the stops can be arranged to avoid the prayer time. Give us the time you follow.
- If a Friday visit has a fixed entry slot, tell us the slot and the venue.
- Ask for the full plan in writing. Whether a stop at a prayer room or mosque fits the route is something we confirm in the quote, not something we promise in advance.
- Do not assume a venue’s hours match the government’s. Check them with the venue for the Friday you plan.
Planning a coach day that includes prayer
Groups from the UK, USA and Europe sometimes travel with a mosque or community leader who sets the prayer times for the day. The daily times move and differ slightly between places, so the leader’s numbers are the ones to send us. A good plan is simple:
- List the prayer times the group follows, in local UAE time, for each day of the programme.
- Mark which are fixed (Friday) and which have a window.
- Give us a start and finish time for each day, then the hotel and the stops.
We work backwards from that to a timetable and show it in the quote. Prayer rooms exist at some places a group will pass through. The Etihad Rail operator lists a prayer room at each of its four stations, and Abu Dhabi’s airport lists prayer rooms too. We cannot say where a mosque will take a coach, as we found no published parking or access information for coaches. Ask us and we will tell you what we know and what we do not. For long days with older travellers, see our guide to pace and rest stops. The tour leader briefing sheet is a good thing to write down the plan on.
Transport hours that follow the weekend
Check these on the day of travel, because public holidays change them.
| Service | Hours the operator lists |
|---|---|
| Dubai Metro, Monday to Thursday | 05:00 to 24:00 |
| Dubai Metro, Friday | 05:00 to 01:00 the next morning |
| Dubai Metro, Saturday | 05:00 to 24:00 |
| Dubai Metro, Sunday | 08:00 to 24:00 |
| Etihad Rail stations, Monday to Sunday | 05:00 to 23:00 |
The Metro hours come from the airport’s transport page and say that service may extend on holidays and citywide celebrations. Train times are on the rail operator’s schedule, which differs by date. A late Sunday-morning start is the one that catches people out. If your flight lands early on a Sunday, the Metro does not cover the early hours, so plan a pre-booked vehicle for them.
Weekends and holidays together
National holidays and the busy season sit on top of the weekend. Our guide to the National Day plan for overseas visitors and the peak season guide cover those dates. Ramadan follows the moon sighting, so we do not print its dates here. Check the announced dates when you plan.
How to book around all of this
Send us the dates, the group size, the bags and the prayer times you follow. We reply with a vehicle and a timetable in a fixed written quote; see the booking page. For an airport run on a Friday morning or a late-night return, the night and early flight guide shows the margins we use, and a city day is outlined in the private minibus city tour.

What time is Friday prayer in the UAE?
The press, quoting the authority, reports 12:45 pm since 2 January 2026. Check the current announcement before you travel.
