A group half day in Old Dubai
The old districts sit on two banks of the Creek. A private vehicle can drop your group on one side and meet it on the other, which a public abra cannot do. Here is the plan, with the times we can source and the points we agree in writing.

Why the two banks matter
Dubai Creek is a stretch of water that RTA, the Dubai transport authority, describes as about 14 kilometres long, dividing Deira from Bur Dubai. The old souks, the heritage neighbourhood and the waterfront walks sit on both sides. A group on foot has to choose: walk back the way it came, or cross.
That is where a driver earns the half day. Drop the group in Bur Dubai in the morning. Let it wander, then cross the water by abra. Meanwhile the vehicle drives round and waits on the Deira side. By road the two banks are close. Al Fahidi to Baniyas Square in Deira is about 5 to 10 minutes, roughly 5 km, as an approximate figure.
We are drivers, not guides. We do not sell tickets, tours or entry to anything. If you want commentary on the Creek or inside a historic house, bring a licensed guide and we plan around their schedule. Our wider private minibus city tour guide covers the full-day version.

Get a quoteThe abra crossing, in RTA’s own words
The traditional abra is the wooden boat that crosses the Creek. RTA lists two routes we can quote with confidence:
- CR1, Bur Dubai Abra Station to Deira Old Souq Abra Station: 6:00 am to 12:00 midnight.
- CR2, Dubai Old Souq Abra Station to Al Sabkha Abra Station: 24-hour service.
RTA also runs petrol-powered heritage abra routes, including ones that call at Al Seef and Al Fahidi. Their times differ by day of the week and by season, and Ramadan and public-holiday hours are different again, so we print none. Check the RTA timetable on the day. RTA says a private charter of an abra across the Creek is available, and payment on the traditional routes is cash only. Ask RTA for the details, since we do not arrange the boat.
One gap to plan for: the RTA pages we read give no passenger limit for the traditional abra. Do not assume a full 30-seater load crosses in one go. Agree with your group leader how people will cross and where the first boat’s passengers wait.
A half-day plan with the vehicle on the far bank
This is an example shape, not a fixed route. Swap the stops for your own and send us the list.
| Step | What happens | Where the vehicle is |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick-up at the hotels, short loop if the group is split | With the group |
| 2 | Drop in Bur Dubai, near Al Fahidi or Al Seef, at the point we agree with you in writing | Leaves for the Deira side |
| 3 | Group walks, then crosses by abra | Parked on the Deira bank |
| 4 | Souk time in Deira | Waiting, at the agreed spot |
| 5 | Group re-boards, head count, back to the hotels | With the group |
Allow about ten minutes to count heads when the group gets back on. The tour leader briefing sheet has a line for exactly this: where the coach waits, and what the guests do if they miss it.
If the group wants to see Jumeirah Mosque first, the two fit together. That visit runs on fixed morning and afternoon sessions, so we cover it on its own page, Jumeirah Mosque group visit transport.
Drive times to the Creek
These are approximate figures from OpenStreetMap routing with no traffic. Google Maps on the day will differ, and you should allow more at peak times. They are drive times only. We have no sourced walking times between the stations and the souks.
| From | To Al Fahidi or Al Seef |
|---|---|
| DXB Terminal 3 | About 5 to 10 minutes, roughly 8 km |
| Downtown | About 10 to 15 minutes, roughly 10 km |
| Deira City Centre | About 10 to 15 minutes, roughly 7 km |
| Dubai Marina | About 20 to 30 minutes, roughly 29 km |
| Palm Jumeirah (Atlantis) | About 25 to 35 minutes, roughly 33 km |
| Al Fahidi to Al Seef | About 5 minutes or less, roughly 1 km |
| Bur Dubai abra station area to Baniyas Square | About 5 to 10 minutes, roughly 4 km |

Where the vehicle can stop
We have not found a published rule on coach bays, parking or waiting places in Bur Dubai, Al Fahidi, Al Seef, Deira Old Souq or the Baniyas Road waterfront, so we do not invent one. Ask us and we confirm the drop-off and collection points in your written quote. We never name a car park or a bay as ours.
The lanes in the old districts are narrow and forecourts are small, so a 50-seater may have to stop on the edge of the district. A 30-seater mini coach or a 13-seater van copes better, as the guide to hotel entrances and tight streets explains. Tell the group before the day if they will walk the last stretch, and have them wear shoes for walking.
An evening cruise on the Creek or the Marina
Many visitors pair an Old Dubai afternoon with a dhow dinner cruise. We do not sell cruises, name operators or run piers. This section covers the road legs for a cruise your group books elsewhere.
- Check first whether your booking includes hotel transfers. Many dinner cruises do, and then you may not need us at all.
- Boarding points differ by operator. Confirm yours on your booking. Cruises are generally reported to board on the Creek, on the Marina side or on the canal, and we make no claim about any one pier.
- Operators commonly ask guests to arrive 20 to 30 minutes before departure, and dinner departures are often in the evening. Check your own booking for both.
If you do want a vehicle, send us the boarding area from your booking and the departure time, and we plan the pick-up and the late return. Marina Walk to Al Seef is about 20 to 25 minutes, roughly 28 km, approximate. Downtown to Marina Walk is about 15 to 20 minutes. JBR to Marina Walk is about 5 to 10 minutes. We agree the exact drop-off with you in writing and never state one ourselves.
For a late return to a hotel in another district, the hourly chauffeur option keeps the vehicle with you for the evening.
Choosing the vehicle and asking for a quote
Seats and luggage are on the fleet pages, and the table in how many suitcases fit in each vehicle applies if the half day starts at the airport. For a day that starts at the hotel, count people and spare seats for shopping bags.
Tell us the date, the group size, the hotels, the first stop and the cruise details if there is one. Send them through the booking page. Ask for a fixed written quote that lists the vehicle, the hours and the agreed drop-off and collection points.

Frequently asked.
Quick answers for this trip.
Can a coach go into Old Dubai?
Coach bays and parking there are not published as far as we can find. The lanes are narrow, so a 50-seater may stop at the edge of the district. Ask us and we confirm the drop-off in your written quote.
Does the vehicle wait while we cross the Creek by abra?
The vehicle does not follow the boat. It drives round and meets the group on the far bank at the point agreed in writing. See the city tour guide for a longer day.
What are the abra hours?
RTA lists the CR1 route from Bur Dubai to Deira Old Souq from 6:00 am to midnight, and the CR2 route as a 24-hour service. Heritage abra times differ by day and season, so check the RTA timetable.
Can you book the abra or a dhow cruise for us?
No. We provide the vehicle and driver only. Cruises and boat charters are booked directly, and some cruises include hotel transfers already.
How far is Old Dubai from Dubai Marina?
Roughly 29 km, about 20 to 30 minutes by road with no traffic. Approximate. See drive times from DXB for the other areas.
Do I need a guide?
The driver is not a licensed guide. Bring one if you want commentary, and we plan around their schedule. A coach has a PA system, covered in our PA system guide.
Can the half day start at the airport?
Yes. DXB Terminal 3 to Al Fahidi is about 5 to 10 minutes. The big group arrival guide explains the time from landing to kerb.
How do I get a quote?
Send the date, the group size, the hotels and the stops through the booking page. We reply with a fixed written quote.
