Nine to thirteen people, one van or not?
A 13-seat van sounds like the obvious answer for a party of 9 to 13. It is, until the suitcases are counted. The van has 13 seats and only 10 places for bags, and holiday groups run out of the second number first.

The short answer
For 9 to 13 people with one suitcase each, a single 13-seater van is the right size. It is a Toyota HiAce with a high roof, individual seat belts, full air-conditioning and a luggage area behind the last row. Seats are passenger seats and the driver is not counted. Bags are medium suitcases, roughly 65 to 70 cm tall.
The catch is arithmetic. Thirteen seats, ten bag places. A party at the top of this band cannot bring a case each and still use one van. The rest of this page is the sum, done three ways, plus a rule for deciding between one vehicle and two. Our wider comparison is in the guide to HiAce, Sprinter, Coaster and 50-seater.

| Party | Seats needed | Suitcases | What fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nine friends, one case each | 9 of 13 | 9 of 10 places | One HiAce, four empty seats |
| Family of twelve, 14 cases | 12 of 13 | 14 against 10 places | Four cases too many for the van |
| Thirteen adults, 13 cases | 13 of 13 | 13 against 10 places | Three cases too many |
Take the family of twelve. People fit with a seat to spare, but the van has ten bag places and the family has fourteen cases. The Sprinter is not the fix: it carries 12 bags, so two are still left on the kerb. Three tidy answers exist. Send a 30-seater mini coach, which has 22 to 30 seats and around 20 bag places and will look half empty. Keep the van and add a separate luggage vehicle that leaves with the group. Or take two Mercedes V-Class vehicles, which seat 14 in total and carry 12 bags between them.
The thirteen adults are one case short of that V-Class sum too, so for them the mini coach is the clean answer. Hand luggage is not counted: a backpack on a lap is not a suitcase. A golf bag, a camera case or a tripod is, and golf bags take the room of several cases. Tell us and we confirm the fit in your written quote.
One vehicle or two: the rule for this size
Use one van when all three of these are true. Everyone fits in 13 seats. The suitcases fit in about 10 places. The whole party sleeps at one hotel and lands within a short time of each other.
Use two vehicles when any one of these is true:
- The party sleeps at two hotels. Two vans, one per hotel, usually beat one van doing a long loop.
- Flights land more than two hours apart. We suggest the first group goes on and the second is brought separately, as on our big group arrival page.
- The programme splits after lunch, with one half shopping and one half on a tour.
- The suitcases outnumber the van but the people do not need a bigger vehicle. A luggage vehicle can be the second one.
If the party is at 12 or 13 and any of those apply, the mini coach is worth pricing alongside, because one driver and one announcement is simpler than two. Ask for both on one request.
What the van is like inside
The seats face forward in rows, each with a belt. There is air-conditioning throughout and the luggage area is at the back, behind the last row. USB charging depends on the vehicle assigned, so ask if it matters. The roof is high but there is no standing headroom to speak of, so the van suits runs of 30 to 40 minutes better than a day of sightseeing.
Other operators advertise HiAce vans as 12, 14 or 15 seaters. The layout decides, and every extra seat takes legroom or luggage room. Ours is a 13-seater. If someone quotes you a 15-seat van for a party of 15, ask where the bags go. Our van with driver page explains how groups use it day to day.
Count before you ask for a quote
- Heads: everyone who needs a seat, including a guide, a nanny or an extra relative who joins late.
- Suitcases by size, not by person. Two small cases are not one big one.
- Anything that does not stand upright: golf bags, instrument cases, sports kit.
- Hotels: one or two, with full names and areas.
- Flight numbers and landing times, if you are arriving. We track every flight.
- Who the group leader is, with a phone that works in the UAE.
Send those and we reply with a vehicle and a fixed written quote.
Landing in Dubai with a party this size
For a group of 9 to 13 the driver waits in the public arrivals hall past customs with a name board showing the group, not one person. Pre-booked vehicles generally cannot wait at the arrivals kerb, so your confirmation says where the group will be met and where the vehicle is. The group airport transfer page covers split flights, DXB and DWC. Terminal detail is in the DXB arrivals guide.
Many long-haul flights land at night or at dawn, and a lot of hotels do not hand over rooms until the afternoon. Ask the hotel for early check-in or bag storage before you fly. If it says no, book the van as a day and the bags stay on board.
If you are on a family holiday, our family holiday in Dubai page has the wider picture. We do not sell tickets or book hotels.
Asking for a quote
Use the booking page and send the six items above. If your party sits close to a limit, say so. We would sooner quote the van and the mini coach side by side than have thirteen people on a plane wondering where their bags will go. See what is in a bus rental quote to read the result line by line.

Frequently asked.
Quick answers for this trip.
Does a party of 13 fit in one van with luggage?
The people do. The van has 13 seats and about 10 medium suitcase places, so 13 people with a case each is three cases over. We would suggest the mini coach or a separate luggage vehicle.
Is 9 people too few for a 13-seater?
No. Nine people in a 13-seater is common, and the spare seats give the group room for hand luggage. A smaller vehicle is only right if the party is seven or fewer with six bags or fewer.
What is the largest party the Sprinter helps with here?
The Sprinter has 16 seats but only 12 bag places, so it adds two bags over the van. It helps when people outnumber seats, not when suitcases are the problem.
Do hand luggage and backpacks count against the 10 places?
No. Count suitcases and large items. Small bags ride on laps or on the seat beside you.
Can the same van stay with us for a few days?
Yes. Arrival, sightseeing days and departure can go on one quote with the same vehicle. Our minibus rental page explains multi-day hire.
What if we are 14?
Fourteen is one over the van. The Sprinter seats 16 and is the usual answer, with the bag limit of 12 in mind.
Do you sell tickets or book hotels?
No. We provide the vehicle and the driver. Tickets and rooms are yours to arrange.
How much does the van cost?
Ask for a fixed written quote. It depends on the date, the route and the hours, and we put it in writing before you accept.
