Vehicle choice

Seven to nine people, V-Class or van?

This is the one size where both vehicles are a real answer, and they fail in different places. The V-Class runs out of seats at eight. The van runs out of bag places at eleven. Where your party sits between those two numbers decides it.

A black Mercedes-Benz V-Class van

The two limits

A Mercedes V-Class seats seven and takes six medium suitcases. A 13-seater van, the Toyota HiAce, seats thirteen and takes about ten. Seats are passenger seats and the driver is not counted.

For a party of seven to nine, one rule does most of the work. Eight or nine people cannot sit in one V-Class, so the question there is one van or two V-Classes. Seven people can sit in either, so the question is the seventh suitcase. The sums below are our own arithmetic on those counts, not quotes.

Nine guests, 9 casesNine people do not fitFits, 4 seats and 1 bag place spare14 seats, 12 bags: fits

The eight friends are the surprise. The van is the bigger vehicle, yet it holds two fewer bags than a pair of V-Classes. With twelve cases the van fails and the pair works to the last bag. The nine guests show the other side: with nine cases the van is easier, because one driver takes everything to one door.

A party of seven with a case each is one bag over the V-Class. Hand luggage does not count, but a golf bag, a camera case or a pram does, and each takes the room of several cases. Tell us and we confirm the fit in your written quote.

What the cabin is like

The V-Class is built for talking to the person opposite. Captain’s seats come in a conference layout on some vehicles, which depends on the model assigned. Electric sliding doors open on both sides, and there is rear climate control, chilled water and chargers. If your party includes the people paying for the trip, or elders who like a quiet cabin, this is the vehicle that looks and feels like a car.

The van is rows of forward-facing seats with belts, full air-conditioning and a luggage area at the back. USB charging depends on the vehicle assigned. It is easy to board, has a high roof and suits a party who care more about space than finish. Seven to nine people in thirteen seats also gives everyone room for hand luggage and a coat on the seat beside them.

Neither is a coach. If the day is long, the comparison of HiAce, Sprinter, Coaster and 50-seater says where the comfort steps are.

The decision rule

Take the number of people and the number of cases and read down this list. Stop at the first line that is true.

  • Seven people or fewer, six cases or fewer: one V-Class.
  • Seven people, seven cases: the van, with six seats empty.
  • Eight or nine people, ten cases or fewer, one hotel: one van.
  • Eight or nine people, eleven or twelve cases: two V-Classes.
  • More than twelve cases: the van with a luggage vehicle, or the 30-seater mini coach.
  • Two hotels, or two flights hours apart, at any of these sizes: two vehicles, whichever they are.

If you are not sure whether the cases will be eleven or ten, ask for a quote for both options on one request. The written figures end the argument faster than guessing.

When two V-Classes make sense

Two V-Classes are the answer for more reasons than bags. The party may be two families, with a V-Class each and a tidy hand-over at the hotel door. Or one half may want to leave the dinner early. Or the party may land on two flights and each car meets its own.

The drawback is two drivers and two vehicles to watch, so group leaders need two phone numbers on the day. For a party that wants one conversation, one door and one set of bags, the van is simpler. A party that wants a finish like a car and two sets of arrivals picks the pair.

For more on the smaller sizes, see five to eight people, one van or two cars. For the next step up, nine to thirteen people takes the van to its limit.

Airport arrival with seven to nine people

The driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board and takes the trolley. Your confirmation says where you will be met. The group airport transfer page explains flight tracking and split arrivals. Hotels often do not hand over rooms until the afternoon, so ask about bag storage or an early check-in before you fly.

If the party stays for days, the same vehicle can serve the whole stay. Our van with driver page covers day hire, and the airport chauffeur page covers a single run. Send the numbers on the booking page and ask for a fixed written quote.

Frequently asked.

Quick answers for this trip.

Can eight people travel in one V-Class?

No. The V-Class seats seven. Eight people need the 13-seater van or a second vehicle.

Does the van or the V-Class carry more suitcases?

The van takes about ten medium suitcases and one V-Class takes six. Two V-Classes take twelve between them, so they beat one van on bags.

Is the V-Class more comfortable than the van?

It has a car-like cabin with captain’s seats, electric sliding doors and rear climate control. The van has more room. Which is better depends on the party and the length of the day.

What if we are seven with seven suitcases?

That is one bag over the V-Class. The van is the clean answer, with six empty seats.

Can two V-Classes go to different hotels?

Yes. Tell us who sleeps where, with full hotel names and areas, and each car is planned to its own hotel.

Do prams and golf bags count?

Yes, as extra. Each takes the space of several cases. Tell us what you carry and we confirm the fit in your written quote.

Can we keep the same vehicle for several days?

Yes. Arrival, sightseeing days and departure can go on one written quote with the same vehicle type.

How much does each option cost?

Ask for a fixed written quote for both options on one request. It depends on the date, the route and the hours.

Seven, eight or nine? Send the bag count.
