Planning guide

Checked out at noon, flying after midnight.

The rooms are gone and the plane is twelve hours away. Suitcases make a day in the city hard. Here is how to spend the gap with one driver, the bags in the vehicle and a fixed time to be at the terminal.

The problem with a free afternoon and a suitcase

Take a common case. Check-out is in the late morning, the flight leaves just after midnight, and the hotel rooms are no longer yours. You can sit in the lobby, drag the bags through a mall, or find somewhere to leave them. None of the three is a good use of a last day in Dubai.

This page is different from our stopover tour. A stopover starts at the airport when you land between two flights. This plan starts in the city, at your hotel, and ends at the airport. You are already in Dubai, so you do not need to think about immigration. You need to think about bags, timing and traffic.

Two ways to handle the bags

  • Ask the hotel for bag storage. Ask before you fly and get the answer in writing. This works when the hotel agrees and you are staying nearby.
  • Book a vehicle for the day instead of paying for a late check-out. The luggage stays on board while you spend a last afternoon in the city, and you go straight to the airport. Our Dubai airport transfer page explains the difference between a day booking and a transfer.

The second option is the one this page builds on. Tell us how many bags you have and what is in them. Keep passports, medicines and valuables in your hand luggage. Ask us how the driver handles the bags at each stop and we confirm it in your written quote.

Work back from the terminal

Most airlines ask you to be at the airport around three hours before an international flight. Subtract that from your departure time and you have your latest arrival at the terminal. Then subtract the drive.

From Downtown the drive is around 15 to 25 minutes outside the peaks. On a weekday evening, from about 4:30 pm until around 8 pm, allow 40 minutes to an hour, according to our DXB to Downtown Dubai page. From the Marina, JBR and the Palm, it is around 35 to 45 minutes outside the rush hours. After 10 pm the Downtown run is around 15 to 20 minutes.

Our stopover guidance says to put the farthest stop first and finish with the easy drive to the airport. The same rule works here.

An example day, flight at 01:00

This is a plan, not a quote. The hours are slots, and the real timings depend on your pace and the roads.

TimeWhat happens
12:00Check out. The driver loads the bags and you start at the far end of the city
12:30 to 15:00Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah Mosque or Kite Beach, with lunch
15:00 to 17:30Old Dubai: Al Fahidi’s old houses, the abra across the Creek, the spice and gold souks
17:30 to 21:00Downtown: the Dubai Mall, a view of the Burj Khalifa, dinner, an evening Fountain show if the timing suits
21:00Leave for DXB. Downtown to the terminal is around 15 to 25 minutes outside the peaks
22:00At the terminal, three hours before the flight, with time in hand

Old Dubai goes in the middle because it is close to the airport and easy to leave. Downtown goes last because the evening is when it is at its best, and it sits near the airport. The Dubai Fountain shows run in the evening, so check the schedule on the day. Attraction tickets, such as the Burj Khalifa observation deck, are booked by you. Book a timed slot ahead, because walk-up queues can eat half an afternoon.

Shorter, longer or shopping-only

Four or five hours is enough for one area and a meal. If the afternoon is hot or the group is tired, pick one area. The shopping day with a group guide shows how a mall-only day works with a vehicle waiting. If you have a full day, the city tour by private minibus guide has a longer route.

Hourly cover is the shape of this booking. A driver who stays with you for the afternoon is the idea behind hourly chauffeur hire, and the quote shows the vehicle, the hours and the airport parking at the end.

Which vehicle

One or two travellers usually take the executive sedan. Three or four with bags fit a luxury SUV. Families and anyone with a lot of luggage travel well in the Mercedes V-Class, which seats seven with six medium bags. A team of colleagues can share a 13-seater van. Child seats are free on request in our cars, SUVs and vans.

What to send us

  • Your check-out time and your hotel name.
  • The departure flight, with the terminal and the time.
  • The number of people and a count of bags.
  • Anything you want to see, and anything that needs a timed ticket.

Use the booking page. A fixed written quote comes back, usually within the hour, and nothing is charged until you accept it.

Frequently asked.

Quick answers for this trip.

Where can I leave my luggage after check-out in Dubai?

Ask the hotel for bag storage before you fly and get the answer in writing. The alternative is a vehicle booked for the day, so the bags stay on board with you.

How long before my flight should I be at the airport?

Most airlines ask for around three hours before an international flight. Check your own airline’s rule, because that time comes off your day.

Can the driver stay with us all afternoon?

Yes. The quote shows the hours. Waiting time is part of it, and extra hours are charged at the rate printed on the same quote.

Will you take us straight to the airport at the end?

Yes. The driver drops you at the departures level of your terminal. Tell us the flight so we build the timings from it.

Do you sell attraction tickets?

No. We provide the vehicle and the driver. Book tickets yourself and choose a timed slot where there is one.

What if the flight is delayed?

Send us the new time as soon as the airline tells you. Changes and cancellations follow the terms on your written quote.

Is this the same as a stopover tour?

No. A stopover starts at the airport between two flights. This is for travellers already in Dubai. See our stopover tour page for that case.

How do I get a price?

Ask for a fixed written quote. It depends on the vehicle, the hours and the route.
