Rail guide

Bags, bikes and clubs on Etihad Rail.

Etihad Rail passenger trains now connect Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah, and a tour leader soon asks the same thing: will our luggage go on the train? The operator has published an allowance and a list of items it does not carry. Here is what those pages say, where they stop short, and when a group is better served by a road vehicle with a driver. We sell no train tickets and we are not the rail operator.

What Etihad Rail says

We read three pages on 31 October 2026: the operator’s baggage allowance page, its help page and its Passenger Charter, sections 20 and 21. The pages are built with scripts, so we opened them in a browser.

Each passenger may bring up to two items free of charge, on any ticket type. Extra baggage must be requested in advance, through the app, the website, the contact centre or a station. Adults and children aged 3 and over get two items each. Infants share the adult’s allowance.

A personal item, such as a handbag or laptop bag, must fit under the seat. A carry-on bag may be up to 55 cm high, 40 cm wide and 23 cm deep, and goes in the overhead rack. Bags must carry a name and contact details. The operator says a passenger must be able to carry, lift and store their own bags without help, and that luggage must not block aisles, doors or exits.

Tourists may use the train with a valid ticket and a valid ID that matches the name on the ticket.

What the charter lists as not permitted

Section 21 of the Passenger Charter lists prohibited and restricted items. One entry, code P6, covers large and disruptive items. It names oversized or bulky luggage, large luggage, boxes, musical instruments, and sports equipment such as skis, snowboards, surfboards, paddles and golf clubs.

Separately, cycles, e-scooters and e-bikes are not permitted. Strollers are allowed if folded, one per child free of charge. A pet may travel only in an approved carrier of the same 55 x 40 x 23 cm size, and the carrier uses up the carry-on allowance.

Notice what is missing. The pages we read give a size for the carry-on, and no measured limit for a full-size suitcase or for an instrument case. The charter’s wording is about items that are large, bulky or disruptive. A violin and a double bass are not the same case, and we do not decide which side of that line your bag falls on. Ask Etihad Rail in writing before you rely on the train for large bags or kit, and keep the reply with your group papers.

What the help page says about the last leg

The help page says that if a train delay makes you miss another Etihad Rail train, you are rebooked at no extra cost. That promise does not cover taxis, e-hailing, the Metro, buses or shuttles. So the leg from the station to your hotel is yours to plan. Our guide to Etihad Rail Dubai Station to your hotel covers that stretch, and the Metro and coach guide explains which parts of a day suit each.

Planning the trip

Start with a luggage count, not a head count. For an example, take a group of 24 travelling to Dubai. Each person may carry up to two items and must lift them unaided, so the group has at most 48 items to load, store and carry through the station. If a few members have golf bags, an instrument or a bike box, those are the items to ask about first.

Where the sum does not work, move the awkward items by road. A group can split: people travel by train with carry-on bags, and the large items go ahead in a vehicle with a driver to the hotel. Or the whole group goes by road, which suits a party with instruments, sports kit or many cases. Tell us the items and their sizes when you ask for a quote, and we confirm what fits. We make no claim about how many golf bags or instruments a given vehicle holds until we have the sizes.

Our suitcase capacity guide and the loading time guide help with the sums, and the tour leader briefing sheet lists what to confirm before each coach day.

Choosing the vehicle

If you decide on the road, count passengers first and bags second. Our guide figures:

How a booked vehicle fits

  1. Send the plan. Dates, route, party size and a list of large items with sizes.
  2. Ask for a fixed written quote. Nothing is charged until you confirm.
  3. Read the meeting and drop-off arrangement. The quote states it, and we update it if a station publishes a rule for road vehicles.
  4. Agree the times. We plan the margin and tell you what is not yet published.
  5. Tell us if plans change. We adjust where we can, and cannot promise to beat traffic.

Frequently asked.

Quick answers for this trip.

How many bags can I take on Etihad Rail?

The operator says up to two items each, free, on any ticket type. Extra baggage must be requested in advance. Adults and children aged 3 and over get two items each, and infants share the adult’s allowance.

How big can a carry-on be?

The operator gives a maximum of 55 cm high, 40 cm wide and 23 cm deep, stored in the overhead rack. A personal item must fit under the seat.

Can we take full-size suitcases?

The pages we read give no measured limit for a full-size suitcase. The charter lists large luggage under large and disruptive items. Ask Etihad Rail in writing before you rely on the train for large bags.

Can we take musical instruments or golf clubs?

The charter lists musical instruments and golf clubs as examples of large and disruptive items. It gives no size line for an instrument case. Ask Etihad Rail in writing, and plan a road option for anything it will not carry.

Can we take bicycles or e-scooters?

No. The operator says cycles, e-scooters and e-bikes are not permitted. Strollers are allowed if folded.

Does the rebooking promise cover my hotel transfer?

Yes, with a valid ticket and a valid ID that matches the name on the ticket, says the operator.

Do you sell train tickets?

No. We are not the rail operator. Tickets are sold by Etihad Rail. We supply a vehicle and a driver, and a licensed guide can be arranged for a fee: ask when you request a quote.

How do I get a price for the road option?
