Dubai taxi fares, or a private car?

Dubai’s taxis are clean, metered and everywhere. For most short hops they are the right answer. For airport runs with luggage, trips to other emirates and groups, the sums often point the other way.

How Dubai taxi fares work

Dubai taxis run on a meter set by the Roads and Transport Authority. The fare is a starting charge plus a rate per kilometre, with a time charge when the car is stuck in traffic. Rides from the airport start higher than rides hailed in the street, and booking through an app can add a booking fee. Salik toll gates are added when the route passes through one.

The exact tariff changes from time to time, so we don’t quote it here. The fares below are what the meter typically reads on common trips in normal traffic, from checks we made in October 2026. For a live figure, use the taxi app’s estimate before you ride.

Our prices are per car, not per person, for a sedan one way. Rush hour can push any metered fare well past these figures.

When the taxi is the right choice

One or two people, light bags, a trip inside Dubai, outside rush hour: take a taxi. Cars are easy to find at hotels, malls and metro stations, the price is fair and nothing needs booking.

We would say the same if you asked us on the phone. A private car makes no sense for a 15-minute hop from the Marina to the Palm.

When a private car costs less or works better

  • Trips to other emirates: a fixed fare to Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or Ras Al Khaimah often matches or beats the meter, and you know the price before you leave
  • Airport runs with luggage or children: a car seat, room for five suitcases and a driver waiting with your name
  • Four or more people: a taxi takes four, so five people need two cars and two fares, while a V-Class carries six with bags
  • Rush hour and early flights: the price doesn’t rise with the traffic, and the car is booked for 04:00 instead of waiting for one to appear
  • A busy day of meetings: hourly chauffeur hire means one driver waiting outside each meeting, not five separate rides

Worked examples

Example: two friends from Dubai Marina to the Dubai Mall at 14:00. Taxi, every time.

Example: a family of five landing at DXB at midnight with six bags, going to the Palm. Two taxis at around AED 100 to 140 each, or one pre-booked V-Class with room for everyone and the luggage. The private car usually wins on comfort and is close on cost.

Example: a business traveller going from Downtown Dubai to Abu Dhabi Airport for an evening flight. The taxi meter plus tolls lands around AED 250 to 350 or more. Our sedan is from AED 300, fixed, against a typical market range of AED 300 to 600.

Taxi apps and ride-hailing

Dubai has its own taxi booking app and the big ride-hailing apps, which offer standard taxis and private cars at different prices. They are useful for short trips. For long trips, early mornings, groups or anything you can’t afford to be late for, a booked car with a confirmed driver is the safer choice. Our guide to Uber, taxi or private transfer from DXB compares the options at the airport.

Tolls and extras

On taxis, Salik tolls are added to the fare as you pass the gates. On our private cars, tolls inside Dubai and Darb tolls in Abu Dhabi are listed on the written quote. Read Salik and Darb tolls explained for how they work.

Frequently asked.

Quick answers for this trip.

How much is a taxi from Dubai Airport to Downtown Dubai?

Roughly AED 60 to 90 on the meter in normal traffic, more at rush hour.

How much is a taxi from Dubai Airport to Dubai Marina?

Roughly AED 100 to 140 on the meter, depending on the traffic and the exact address.

How much is a taxi from Dubai to Abu Dhabi?

Roughly AED 250 to 350 on the meter between the two city centres, plus tolls. Our fixed-price sedan to Abu Dhabi Airport is from AED 300.

Are taxis expensive in Dubai?

Not for short trips. Long trips, rush hour and airport pick-ups are where the fare grows, and where a fixed price can work out better.

Do Dubai taxis charge Salik?

Yes, tolls are added to the meter when the route passes a Salik gate. Our private car quotes list tolls before you confirm.

How many people fit in a Dubai taxi?

Four passengers in a standard taxi. Larger taxis exist, but for five or more people with luggage, a pre-booked van is easier.

Is a private car cheaper than a taxi in Dubai?

For short trips inside the city, no. For trips to other emirates, groups and airport runs with luggage, it is often close to or below two taxis.
