The run from DXB to the Marina

DXB is on the Deira side of the city and Dubai Marina is down the coast to the south-west, past Jumeirah and Al Sufouh. Outside the rush hours the drive takes about 30 to 45 minutes. In the weekday morning and evening peaks, it can take much longer, and an accident on the main road can add more.

For a group, the time that matters is door to door, from the aircraft door to the hotel lobby. That includes immigration, baggage claim, the walk to the vehicle, the drive and the unloading. Plan roughly two hours from landing to the lobby for a group of 30 or more, and more at a busy hour. Our big group arrival guide goes through the airport side in detail.

Traffic windows to know about

Weekday mornings from roughly 7 am to 9:30 am are slow on the roads out of the city centre towards the coast, and weekday evenings from about 4:30 pm to 8 pm are slow in the opposite direction, as people drive home. Friday afternoons and evenings can be busy with leisure traffic. Late evening and early morning are quicker.

Many long-haul flights land at night, when the roads are clear and the drive is at the short end of the range. Midday landings usually avoid the worst, and late-afternoon landings are the hardest for the Marina. If you have a choice of flights, ask your travel agent to think about this. If you do not, we plan the vehicle for the time you have.

Where the vehicle stops at Marina hotels

Marina hotels sit on a mix of roads, and drop points differ. Some have a forecourt that fits a mini coach, some have a lower entrance that a full-size coach cannot use, and some have a lay-by on the road. A driver who has done the run before knows which hotels are tight.

When you book, send the hotel name. If you know the hotel’s coach arrangements, tell us. If not, we suggest asking the hotel’s reception whether they have a coach bay or which entrance suits a vehicle of that height. The mini coach gets into narrower forecourts than the 50-seater. We would rather plan a short walk with the luggage on a trolley than leave a 50-seater stuck on the road.

Luggage from hold to lobby

The 50-seater holds about one medium suitcase per passenger under the floor, and the mini coach has room for around twenty medium suitcases. At the hotel the driver opens the hold and the bags come out together. For a group of forty, the hotel’s luggage trolleys and porter team matter. Ask the hotel to expect a large group at the time you give us, particularly if the arrival is in the early hours.

Put name tags on bags before the flight. Groups that tag with the hotel name and the room-block name make it far easier for the porters.

Which vehicle for which group

Starting prices are day rates for up to 10 hours with driver and fuel. A one-way airport transfer is quoted as its own line on your written quote, and the quote confirms the exact price for your date, route and hours.

The flight lands at 18:40, in the evening peak. The group is through immigration and bags by about 20:00. A mini coach leaves at 20:10 and the road is easing, so the drive takes 40 to 50 minutes. The group reaches the Marina hotel about 21:00. The driver unloads with the hotel porters and leaves once the last bag is inside. If the same flight landed at 4:30 pm, the same drive could be an hour or more, and the quote would still be the same fixed figure unless the waiting allowance runs out.
