Airport guide

Reduced mobility at DXB, step by step.

One person in a group of thirty may need a wheelchair or extra help at Dubai International. The group organiser then has questions that the airline’s booking page rarely answers: who provides the help, where it starts, and what it does to the group’s timing. This page sets out what Dubai Airports itself publishes, says plainly what it does not, and shows where the ground transfer fits.

Aircraft at a Dubai International Airport terminal, where special assistance is arranged through the airline

What the airport says

Dubai Airports describes wheelchair help at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central as a service run by dnata. For a departing guest, it says help is available from the kerb at Terminal 3 only, and from the check-in counters at Terminals 1 and 2, through to the boarding gate. It tells guests to ask when they book the ticket or at the airline’s check-in counter.

For an arriving guest who has pre-booked help, the airport says to make yourself known to the dnata staff at the arrival gate when you leave the aircraft. The airport’s FAQ says a wheelchair is booked through the airline, in advance if possible. Its special assistance page says to contact the airline for extra support.

We are a ground transport company. We do not run, book or control any of this, and the airline decides what it will arrange for a given passenger. Read the airport’s own pages and your airline’s notices for your date.

The chair, the shuttle and the lanes

The airport says a guest who brings their own wheelchair has it tagged at check-in, and a dnata chair is used for the journey through the airport. It lists a taxi-style chair with a luggage area underneath, and standard chairs in three widths. The airport says its services are free for people of determination, which is its term for people with disabilities.

It also says a buggy shuttle runs 24 hours a day with priority access between the terminals and concourses, though its FAQ adds that buggy service is subject to availability and must be booked through the airline or the service provider. A free TaxiDXB buggy service is listed in Terminal 3, Concourses B and C.

For passport control, the airport says special counters exist in arrivals and departures at all terminals, run by the identity authority. On departure, a wheelchair user is escorted through the lane. On arrival, staff guide the guest to it. Dubai Customs also has dedicated counters in arrivals and departures. A Sunflower lanyard, for hidden disabilities, can be collected at the special assistance desk. For the rest of the arrival sequence, see our guide to passport control and smart gates for groups and families.

Where help starts at each terminal

The detail that changes a group’s plan is the starting point. At Terminal 3 the airport says help can begin at the kerb. At Terminals 1 and 2 it begins at the check-in counters. So on a Terminal 1 or 2 departure, the group has to get the person from the vehicle to the counters before the airport’s service picks up.

Which terminal your airline uses is on your ticket, and our terminals guide lists it by airline. A group on split flights may be in two terminals at once, so ask each airline separately.

What is not published

We found no published time for how long the handling takes, no figure for how many staff are on a shift, and no statement that help is certain at any hour. The airport’s page on accessible transport mentions an accessible taxi service, but the details were not on the page we opened, so we say nothing about it. Notice periods are the airline’s to set, so check your own airline’s page rather than rely on any figure you read elsewhere.

The airport’s safety page says guests with strollers or bulky baggage should use lifts rather than escalators, and that trolleys are not allowed on the airport train. It also says to supervise children and take extra care with older travellers. We repeat that as the airport’s advice only.

Planning the group’s day

Start with a list of who needs help, which flight each person is on and which terminal that flight uses. The passenger manifest template has a place for notes. Send the list to the airline early, and send the same list to us, so the quote names it.

For an example, a group of 20 flies out of Terminal 1 in the evening, and two members need wheelchair help. The leader asks the airline to arrange it at booking. On the day, the vehicle reaches the terminal building and the group takes the two members to the check-in counters, where the airport says the service begins. Because the airport publishes no handling time, the leader sets the departure from the hotel earlier than for a group without this need, and agrees the time with us in writing. Your own flights, group and hotel will change the sum.

Our guides to leaving the hotel with a group and loading time for group luggage show how we plan the clock for a departure. On arrival, our big group arrival guide covers larger parties. Your written quote states the meeting arrangement for each flight.

Choosing the vehicle

Tell us the headcount and the bags first. Our guide figures:

This page does not describe how a person using a wheelchair would board any of our vehicles. If anyone in your group needs help getting on or off a vehicle, or needs extra time, tell us in advance, and we confirm the arrangement in writing before you travel. Our suitcase guide explains the luggage figures.

How a booked vehicle fits

  1. Send the plan. Flights, terminals, hotel, party size, and who needs extra time or help.
  2. Ask for a fixed written quote. Nothing is charged until you confirm.
  3. Read the meeting and drop-off arrangement. The quote states it for each flight.
  4. Agree the departure time. We plan the margin and tell you what is not published.
  5. Tell us if plans change. We adjust where we can, and cannot promise to beat queues or traffic.

Dubai Airports says wheelchair help at DXB and Dubai World Central is provided by dnata. It is arranged through the airline, in advance if possible.

Where does the help start for a departing passenger?

The airport says at the kerb at Terminal 3 only, and at the check-in counters at Terminals 1 and 2, then through to the boarding gate.

What do we do on arrival?

If help was pre-booked, the airport says to tell the dnata staff at the arrival gate when you leave the aircraft. Your written quote states the meeting arrangement for the airport.

The airport says a guest’s own chair is tagged at check-in and a dnata chair is used for the airport journey. Ask your airline what happens to the chair on the aircraft.

Can you tell us how a wheelchair user boards your vehicles?

Not on this page. Tell us what the group needs when you ask for a quote, and we confirm the arrangement in writing before you travel.

How do I get a price?

Ask for a fixed written quote through the booking form with the flights, terminals, hotel, party size and any extra time needed. Nothing is charged until you confirm.
